Right now, there are over 500,000 wildfires burning across Earth. To help the millions impacted, Google Research has announced an expansion of its wildfire boundary tracker. The AI powered tech uses satellite imagery to find active wildfires and mark their ever-changing boundaries. Users can easily see the mapped data displayed through Google Maps and Google Search.
Previously, the wildfire boundary tracker was only accessible in North America, Australia, and parts of South America. Google has launched the tool’s access in 15 new countries across Europe and Africa. Communities in highly effected places like Portugal, Rwanda, Greece, Turkey, Spain, Kenya, and France can now use the AI tracker to see exactly where a wildfire is and how to avoid it. Aside from the boundary, location and size of a particular blaze, users receive helpful info and resources from local emergency agencies (linked to an SOS alert). Even while driving, the tool lets you see if you are traveling near or towards an active wildfire.
Google has also created a way to predict the intensity of a fire. Though it’s still in development, the high fidelity fire stimulator will assist with forecasting the behavior of extreme or emergency wildfires, under a wide range of conditions.
