<KEY RECALL STATS>
Reason:
In 2014, several major automakers announced a global recall of vehicles containing Takata airbags. The defective airbag can explode, making drivers and others inside a car susceptible to flying metal fragments. Over 30 deaths and at least 400 injuries have occurred. Worldwide, an estimated 100 million vehicles have been recalled. Yet, the risk is ongoing. Despite being recalled a decade ago, about 6.4 million vehicles (in North America) with the Takata airbag remain on the road. Over 19 manufacturers including Nissan, Toyota, Acura, BMW, Chrysler, Ford, Dodge, and Mazda have vehicles with a Takata airbag inflator. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration in the U.S. has provided a full list of affected models.
