Aside from the “ban-or-sell” law recently issued in the United States, TikTok could soon be facing a complete ban in Europe. Ursula von der Leyen, the European Union’s president considers the social media app a “danger.” During the first debate for Europe’s 2024 election, von der Leyen responded to the moderator’s question of a possible TikTok ban in the region; stating, “it’s not excluded.” She also pointed out how the European Commission is “the very first institution worldwide to ban TikTok on our corporate phones.” Currently, ByteDance (the owners of TikTok) is being investigated by the EU for offering users rewards (like vouchers and gift cards) to interact with TikTok content through its “Task and Reward” program (offered via TikTok Lite). Under the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), a company’s failure to protect minors could warrant a temporary suspension. The Commission is also assessing TikTok’s advertising transparency, data access and “addictive” design features. First released in 2016, over 300 million TikTok users live in the United States or within the European Union.
